tldr: my top 3 bakeries: kayani bakery (iconic shrewsbury, camp, rs 350/tin), le plaisir (best artisan, deccan), and theobroma (best chocolate, multiple outlets). pune has an incredible bakery culture, from 70-year-old irani bakeries to new-wave sourdough spots. full reviews below.
pune has a bakery culture that most indian cities don’t.
and it’s because of the irani and parsi bakeries that have been here since pre-independence. kayani, goodluck, yezdan. these places have been baking the same recipes for decades. the shrewsbury biscuit is literally a pune souvenir. people bring it back from pune like people bring chocolates from switzerland.
but the bakery scene has also evolved. there are now artisan bakeries doing proper sourdough, french pastries, european techniques. the old and the new coexist, and that’s what makes pune’s bakery scene special.
i have a serious sweet tooth. these reviews reflect that. i’ve eaten my weight in croissants and biscuits across these 12 bakeries.
for sit-down cafes, check my cafe guide. for proper restaurants, my restaurant guide.

the legends
1. kayani bakery
camp / 9/10
if you leave pune without a tin of kayani’s shrewsbury biscuits, did you even visit pune?
kayani has been at the same spot on east street since 1955. the shrewsbury biscuits are buttery, crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. the recipe hasn’t changed. the taste hasn’t changed. the tin packaging hasn’t changed. and nobody wants it to.
the khari pav is flaky and addictive. the mawa cake is dense and rich. the brun pav is the foundation of every irani cafe breakfast.
get there early. the shrewsbury sells out by 2-3pm on busy days. there’s always a line during diwali and christmas. the tin costs rs 350 and it’s the best rs 350 you’ll spend in pune.
i buy a tin every month. it never lasts more than a week.
must buy: shrewsbury biscuits (rs 350/tin), khari pav, mawa cake verdict: pune’s most iconic bakery. the shrewsbury biscuit is not just a biscuit, it’s a pune symbol.
2. le plaisir
deccan / 9/10
the opposite end of the spectrum from kayani. le plaisir is new-wave artisan baking. the chef trained at le cordon bleu and it shows in every pastry.
the croissants are the best in pune. buttery, flaky, with visible layers. the opera cake is textbook perfect. the fruit tarts are beautiful and delicious. the sourdough bread is excellent.
this is where pune’s bakery scene shows it can compete with mumbai and bangalore. the technique is european, the quality is consistent, and the attention to detail is obsessive.
is it expensive? yes. a croissant is rs 200. but it’s a rs 200 croissant that’s actually worth rs 200. most places charge the same and deliver mediocrity.
must buy: butter croissant, opera cake, fruit tart, sourdough loaf verdict: best artisan bakery in pune. european quality, pune prices.
3. theobroma
multiple outlets / 8.5/10
chocolate. everything chocolate. brownies, cakes, cookies, pastries. if it can be made with chocolate, theobroma makes it.
the brownies are dense, fudgy, and come in multiple varieties. the chocolate cake is rich without being cloying. the hazelnut praline is addictive. the packaging is gift-ready.
yes, it’s a chain from mumbai. yes, purists will complain. but the quality is genuinely excellent. i keep a box of their brownies in my fridge at all times. at all times.
must buy: brownies (classic and walnut), chocolate overload cake, hazelnut praline verdict: best chocolate bakery in pune. brownie quality is unmatched.
the institutions
4. german bakery
koregaon park / 8/10
pune institution since the 1980s. the cinnamon rolls are the signature item. soft, gooey, perfectly spiced. the brown bread is wholesome. the quiche is reliable.
the bakery hasn’t changed much in decades. the menu is simple. the execution is consistent. early morning at german bakery with a cinnamon roll and coffee is a pune ritual.
i covered this in my brunch guide too. it’s that kind of place.
must buy: cinnamon roll, brown bread, quiche verdict: pune’s classic bakery. the cinnamon roll alone justifies the reputation.
5. marzorin
camp / 8/10
the cold coffee is legendary but the bakery counter is the real star. chicken patties, veg puffs, cream rolls, pastries. everything is old-school, affordable, and good.
a chicken patty costs rs 45. a cream roll costs rs 40. you can get a full snack for under rs 100. try doing that at le plaisir.
marzorin has been here since the 1960s. the recipes are unchanged. the prices are somehow still reasonable.
must buy: chicken patty, cream roll, mutton puff, cold coffee verdict: best budget bakery in pune. old-school baking at old-school prices.
the new wave
6. pune baking company
baner / 8/10
the best sourdough in pune. proper 48-hour fermentation, beautiful crumb, crusty exterior. the baker here actually understands fermentation, not just the word but the science.
the focaccia is excellent. the ciabatta is chewy and perfect for sandwiches. the cookies are thick and indulgent. this is baner’s best bakery by a wide margin.
must buy: sourdough loaf, focaccia, chocolate chip cookies verdict: best sourdough in pune. proper artisan bread baking.
7. connie’s
koregaon park / 8/10
the custom cake queen of pune. birthdays, weddings, anniversaries. connie’s does it all and does it well. the cakes actually taste as good as they look, which is rare in custom cake world.
the red velvet is their bestseller. the carrot cake is underrated. they do consultations for big orders.
must buy: red velvet cake, carrot cake, macarons verdict: best custom cakes in pune. for when you need a cake that impresses.
8. baker’s basket
multiple outlets / 7.5/10
the affordable option. decent cakes at reasonable prices. not artisan level, not trying to be. the chocolate truffle cake is rs 300 for half a kg. good enough for an office birthday.
must buy: chocolate truffle cake, pineapple pastry, muffins verdict: best affordable bakery chain in pune. budget cakes that don’t taste budget.
also worth trying
9. the french window patisserie
koregaon park / 7.5/10
french pastries and baked goods. the croissants are good, not le plaisir good, but good. the setting is beautiful. i’ve covered this in my cafes guide.
verdict: good bakery cafe in kp. the cafe experience elevates the bakery.
10. cafe madeline
koregaon park / 7.5/10
over 25 varieties of pastries and desserts. the macaron tower is instagram-famous. the almond croissant is excellent. the cheesecake is dense and rich. more dessert cafe than pure bakery.
verdict: best dessert display in pune. come for the visual as much as the taste.
11. la brioche
baner / 7/10
neighborhood bakery doing decent breads and pastries. the garlic bread is popular. the sandwiches are fresh. nothing remarkable but fills the baner bakery gap.
verdict: solid neighborhood bakery. fine for daily bread needs.
12. monginis
multiple outlets / 6.5/10
the budget chain. everyone’s first birthday cake probably came from monginis. the quality has dipped over the years. the cakes are sweet, the pastries are average. but at rs 50 for a pastry, what do you expect?
verdict: the rs 50 pastry. you get what you pay for.
the pune bakery trail
if you have one afternoon for bakeries:

- walk to marzorin - chicken patty, cold coffee (20 min)
- auto to le plaisir - croissant, opera cake (30 min)

total: rs 800-1000. total time: 2-3 hours. total regret: zero.
