tldr: my top 3 street food experiences in pune: jj garden vada pav (rs 20, pure perfection), katkirr misal (rs 80, spiciest misal i’ve had), and sujata mastani (rs 120, the drink that defines pune). spent about rs 3,000 eating street food across the city over 2 months. every spot reviewed with prices below.
pune’s street food scene is genuinely world-class. i’ll say that without hesitation.
i’ve lived here long enough to have my own routes, my own spots, my own opinions about which misal is better than which (this is a very serious topic in pune, people have strong feelings). every weekend i end up at some stall somewhere, standing in a crowd, eating something that costs less than my morning coffee.
the thing about pune street food is that it’s deeply maharashtrian. yes, you’ll find momos and chaat. but the soul of pune street food is misal pav, vada pav, bhel, and mastani. these are things you can’t get this good anywhere else in india.
here are 18 spots i’ve eaten at multiple times, with honest reviews and exact prices.
for sit-down restaurants, read my full restaurant guide. for cafes, there’s my 29-cafe review.

vada pav (pune’s pride)
mumbai claims vada pav but pune does it different. less garlic chutney, crispier vada, more focus on the dry chutneys. some will argue mumbai does it better. they’re wrong.
1. jj garden vada pav
swargate / rs 20 / 9.5/10
the best vada pav i’ve ever had. not in pune. anywhere.
the vada is fried fresh in front of you. the outer layer is impossibly crispy while the inside is soft, well-spiced potato. the green chutney is nuclear-level spicy. the dry garlic chutney adds another dimension. and the pav is fresh, soft, slightly sweet.
rs 20. twenty rupees. for perfection. i’ve spent rs 500 at fancy restaurants and been less satisfied.
the stall gets crowded during lunch. go at 11am or after 3pm. there’s no seating. you stand, you eat, you leave happy.
verdict: best vada pav in pune. best vada pav i’ve ever had. rs 20 for something money can’t buy at any restaurant.
2. garden vada pav (fc road)
fc road / rs 25 / 8.5/10
the fc road version. slightly different recipe, slightly bigger vada, slightly more expensive. still excellent. this is where college students from fergusson and bmcc fuel up.
the line is always there. the turnover is fast. fresh vada every few minutes. the sukhi chutney (dry chutney) here is the best part.
what to order: vada pav with extra sukhi chutney verdict: best vada pav on fc road. the college student’s best friend.
3. baba vada pav
kothrud / rs 20 / 7.5/10
solid kothrud option. not as good as jj garden but good enough when you’re in the area. the vada is consistent, the pav is fresh.
verdict: kothrud’s best vada pav. nothing fancy, just reliable.
4. jumbo king
multiple locations / rs 30 / 7/10
the chain. it’s fine. it’s consistent. it’s everywhere. it’s not going to blow your mind but it’ll satisfy a craving quickly. the cheese vada pav is their selling point.
verdict: the mcdonald’s of vada pav. reliable, not exciting.
misal pav (pune’s soul food)
misal pav is pune’s contribution to world cuisine and i will not entertain any argument about this. spicy sprouted moth bean curry, topped with crunchy farsan, onions, lemon, and served with soft pav. it’s a flavor bomb.
the misal wars in pune are real. every neighborhood has “the best misal” and people get genuinely angry if you disagree.
5. katkirr misal
sadashiv peth / rs 80 / 9/10
my personal favorite misal in pune. spicy. genuinely, painfully spicy. but the flavor underneath the heat is incredible. they use a specific masala blend that’s been perfected over generations.
the tarri (the spicy gravy) is what makes katkirr different. it’s oily, fiery, and complex. the farsan on top is crunchy. the pav is soft. the combination is transcendent.
go early. they run out by 12pm. not a joke. they literally close when the misal is done.
what to eat: misal pav, nothing else. just misal pav. verdict: best spicy misal in pune. not for beginners. bring a high spice tolerance.
6. bedekar misal
narayan peth / rs 90 / 9/10
the most famous misal in pune. and unlike most famous things, it actually deserves the fame. bedekar has been serving misal since the 1920s.
their misal is slightly less spicy than katkirr but more complex in flavor. the sprouted moth beans are perfectly cooked. the presentation is traditional. you get a steel plate, pav, misal, and papad.
the line on weekends starts at 7am. yes, 7am. for misal. that’s how serious pune is about this.
what to eat: misal pav with extra papad verdict: most famous misal in pune and it deserves every bit of the reputation. slightly less spicy than katkirr but more balanced.
7. baburao misal
sadashiv peth / rs 100 / 8/10
good misal but the real star here is the sitaphal basundi (custard apple milkshake/dessert). having misal and then following it with basundi is a classic pune combination.
the misal itself is solid. medium spice, good tarri, fresh farsan. but the combo experience is what makes baburao special.
what to eat: misal pav + sitaphal basundi (in season) verdict: best misal + dessert combo in pune. the basundi alone is worth the trip.
bhel and chaat (the snack trail)
8. fc road bhel guy
fc road, near garware bridge / rs 40 / 8.5/10
i don’t know his name. nobody does. he’s just “the bhel guy.” he’s been there for years with his cart, and his bhel puri is the best in pune.
the technique is mesmerizing. the speed at which he mixes everything. the crunch of the puffed rice, the tang of the tamarind, the spice of the green chutney. each plate is slightly different because he does it by feel, not by recipe.
go around 5-6pm. that’s when the fc road evening crowd gathers and the bhel is at its best.
verdict: best bhel puri in pune. a nameless legend.
9. kalyan bhel
camp / rs 50 / 8/10
more established than the fc road guy. proper stall with seating. the bhel here is crunchier, uses more sev, and has a tangier profile. they also do sev puri and dahi puri.
what to eat: bhel puri, sev puri verdict: best chaat stall in camp. more variety than just bhel.
10. tulsibaug chaat
tulsibaug / rs 50 / 7.5/10
tulsibaug is pune’s shopping area but the real attraction is the food. multiple chaat stalls, each with their own specialty. walk around, try a few. the dabeli stall near the entrance is underrated.
verdict: best area for chaat grazing. walk, eat, walk, eat.
11. shree krishna bhelwala
sadashiv peth / rs 40 / 7.5/10
solid bhel, good panipuri. the panipuri here uses a slightly sweet water which is different from the standard spicy version. worth trying if you’re in the area.
verdict: good bhel with the best sweet panipuri in pune.
mastani (pune’s signature drink)
mastani is pune’s gift to the world. it’s a thick milkshake topped with ice cream, dry fruits, and sometimes fresh fruit. it was invented in pune. nowhere else does it like this.
12. sujata mastani
sadashiv peth / rs 120 / 9/10
the original. the one that started it all. sujata mastani has been making mastani for decades and it’s still the best.
the sitaphal (custard apple) mastani in season is liquid gold. out of season, the mango or chocolate versions are excellent. it’s thick enough that a spoon stands up in it. it’s rich, indulgent, and costs rs 120 for a large glass.
i’ve tried mastani at 15 different places in pune. nobody comes close to sujata.
what to order: sitaphal mastani (in season), mango mastani (summer), chocolate mastani (anytime) verdict: best mastani in pune. the original and still unmatched.
momos and other street food
13. tibetan kitchen
koregaon park / rs 100 / 8/10
the best momos in pune. run by a tibetan family, these are authentic, not the mayo-cheese momos that most places serve. the jhol momos (in a spicy soup) are incredible.
the thukpa (tibetan noodle soup) is perfect for rainy days. small place, always full, order and wait.
what to order: jhol momos, steam momos, thukpa verdict: best momos in pune. authentic tibetan, not the instagram kind.
14. nal stop corn
sinhagad road / rs 30 / 8/10
the sweetest corn in pune. he roasts it over charcoal and the caramelization is perfect. butter, lemon, masala. rs 30 for a cob that takes 15 minutes to eat.
this is peak pune evening snack. sit on the footpath, eat corn, watch the world go by.
verdict: best corn in pune. simple perfection.
15. sp biryani corner
camp / rs 120 / 7.5/10
street biryani. cooked in massive pots, served on plates. it’s not going to win any awards but at rs 120 for a generous plate, it fills you up. late-night option for when proper restaurants are closed.
for real biryani, read my dedicated biryani guide.
verdict: best late-night street biryani. fills the gap, nothing more.
16. momo plaza
baner / rs 80 / 7/10
baner’s momo spot. decent but not tibetan kitchen level. the tandoori momos are their selling point. cheesy, grilled, instagram-friendly.
verdict: decent momos in baner. order the tandoori ones.
17. shivaji market pav bhaji
camp / rs 80 / 7/10
solid pav bhaji. generous butter. well-mashed bhaji. the pav is toasted crispy. camp area classic.
verdict: good pav bhaji. not the best in pune but reliable.
18. german bakery stalls
koregaon park / rs 60 / 6.5/10
the stalls around german bakery area sell mixed snacks. some days it’s great, some days it’s meh. inconsistent but worth trying when you’re in kp.
verdict: hit or miss. try your luck.
