best street food in mumbai (2026)

tldr: my top 5 mumbai street food spots are ashwin vada pav (dadar), cannon pav bhaji (chowpatty), elco market (bandra), anand stall (juhu), and mohammed ali road (late-night everything). total damage for the complete trail: around rs 800. mumbai’s street food is genuinely the best in india.
every time i land in mumbai, the first thing i eat is a vada pav. not from the airport. not from a restaurant. from the first roadside stall i find outside the terminal. rs 20, wrapped in newspaper, eaten standing on the footpath while dodging autorickshaws. that’s the correct way to start a mumbai trip.
mumbai’s street food isn’t just food. it’s infrastructure. this city runs on vada pav the way silicon valley runs on venture capital. the office worker grabbing a rs 20 breakfast, the college kid eating bhel at chowpatty after class, the late-night kebab run after drinks in colaba - street food is woven into every layer of mumbai life.
i’ve eaten at most of these places over multiple trips. some were recommendations from friends who’ve lived in mumbai for years. the prices listed are from my last visit (early 2026) - they might go up by rs 5-10 but that’s about it. mumbai street food remains ridiculously cheap.
for sit-down meals, check my mumbai restaurants guide. for drinking after the street food crawl, here’s the bars guide.

the vada pav trail
vada pav is mumbai. not a metaphor. the city consumes an estimated 10-20 lakh vada pavs every single day. it’s a deep-fried spiced potato patty (the vada) inside a pav (bread roll) with chutneys. it costs rs 15-25 and it’s the most democratic food in india. everyone eats it - ceos, autorickshaw drivers, college students, film stars.
1. ashwin vada pav
dadar / rs 20-25 / 9/10
this is it. the one everyone talks about. ashwin vada pav near dadar station has a queue that wraps around the corner from 7am. the vada is freshly fried, the potato filling is perfectly spiced with green chili and ginger, and the garlic chutney hits different.
i first tried this on a friend’s insistence. “you haven’t had vada pav until you’ve had ashwin,” he said. annoying, but correct. the vada is crispy outside, soft inside, and the ratio of vada to pav is perfect. most places skimp on the vada or overdo the bread. ashwin gets the balance exactly right.
the dry garlic chutney (sukhi chutney) is the secret weapon. they make it fresh daily and it’s spicier than most.
verdict: best vada pav in mumbai. the queue is worth it. go before 9am for the freshest batch.
14. mama kane
thane / rs 15-20 / 8/10
mama kane in thane is the outsider pick. less famous than ashwin but equally good, and arguably better on the chutney front. the fried green chili served on the side is an essential addition.
if you’re in thane for any reason (unlikely for tourists, very likely for mumbai locals), this is the vada pav spot.
verdict: thane’s best-kept secret. slightly cheaper, slightly less crowded, equally delicious.
17. sadguru vada pav
multiple locations / rs 20-30 / 7/10
sadguru is the chain option. consistent, clean, and available everywhere. it’s not going to blow your mind like ashwin, but it’s reliable. the schezwan vada pav is a surprisingly good twist on the original.
verdict: the reliable chain. good when you can’t find anything better nearby.
the pav bhaji belt
after vada pav, pav bhaji is mumbai’s second religion. mashed mixed vegetables cooked in butter (lots of butter), served with toasted buttered pav. the amount of butter used would give a cardiologist nightmares. that’s the point.
2. cannon pav bhaji
girgaon chowpatty / rs 120-150 / 9/10
cannon has been at chowpatty since the 1970s. the pav bhaji here uses a proprietary masala blend and an amount of butter that defies reason. the bhaji arrives swimming in a lake of melted amul butter. the pav is toasted on a flat griddle until crispy and golden.
every time i go to chowpatty, this is the stop. the bhaji has a depth of flavor that most pav bhaji stalls can’t match - it’s smoky, slightly tangy, and the masala builds heat slowly. the pav-to-bhaji ratio is generous. rs 120 for a plate that genuinely fills you up.
the best time to go is evening, around 7-8pm. the chowpatty sea breeze, the crowd, the hot pav bhaji - that’s the mumbai experience right there.
verdict: best pav bhaji in mumbai. the butter quantity is medically concerning and absolutely necessary.
3. anand stall
juhu beach / rs 100-130 / 9/10
anand stall at juhu beach is the other pav bhaji legend. slightly less butter than cannon (still an irresponsible amount), slightly more rustic preparation. the bhaji here has more texture - you can taste individual vegetables instead of a completely smooth mash.
the juhu beach setting adds everything. sitting on the sand, watching the sunset, eating hot pav bhaji from a paper plate. that’s the kind of evening that makes you understand why people love mumbai despite the traffic, the rent, and the humidity.
verdict: best pav bhaji at juhu. the beach setting elevates it from great food to great experience.
8. sardar pav bhaji
tardeo / rs 130-160 / 8.5/10
sardar near tardeo is the local favorite. less touristy than cannon or anand, equally good food. the pav bhaji here is slightly more buttery (yes, even more) and the cheese variant is popular - they grate a mountain of cheese on top. the pav is toasted to perfection.
smaller crowd, less chaos, same quality. if you want the pav bhaji without the beach-crowd experience, sardar is your spot.
verdict: local’s pick for pav bhaji. less famous, equally excellent.
chaat and snacks
4. elco market
hill road, bandra / rs 50-80 / 8.5/10
elco is bandra’s chaat institution. the pani puri is the best in bandra, hands down. thin, crispy puris filled with spiced potato, topped with sweet-tangy-spicy pani. the sev puri is loaded with three chutneys and a mountain of sev.
a friend in bandra said “elco is where you go when you want chaat that doesn’t disappoint.” accurate. the bhel puri is mumbai-style - puffed rice, sev, raw mango, onion, coriander, and the signature date-tamarind chutney.
verdict: best chaat in bandra. reliable, affordable, always a queue (that moves fast).
12. vithal bhelwala
girgaon / rs 40-60 / 8/10
if you want the original mumbai bhel, this is it. vithal bhelwala has been at girgaon since the 1960s. the bhel here is simpler than the fancy versions - puffed rice, sev, onion, raw mango, chutneys. no frills. the ratios are perfect.
verdict: original mumbai bhel. no pretension, pure flavor.
16. babulnath chaat
girgaon / rs 40-80 / 7.5/10
near the babulnath temple. the sev puri and ragda pattice here are excellent. the ragda (white peas curry) is hot, slightly spicy, poured over crispy potato patties. simple, satisfying.
verdict: temple-adjacent chaat that delivers. the ragda pattice is the star.
dosa and south indian
6. giriraj dosa
thane / rs 80-150 / 8.5/10
yes, it’s in thane. yes, it’s worth the journey. giriraj dosa makes dosas that are 3 feet long, paper-thin, and impossibly crispy. the masala dosa is the classic, but the schezwan dosa and the paneer dosa have their own following.
the dosas are made on a huge tawa and served on a tray because no plate can contain them. the sambar and chutneys are standard. you come for the dosa itself.
verdict: most spectacular dosa in mumbai. the size alone is worth the instagram story.
the mohammed ali road experience
7. mohammed ali road
bhendi bazaar / rs 100-300 / 9/10
mohammed ali road during ramzan is the greatest street food experience in india. i’ll die on this hill.
the road transforms into a mile-long food festival every evening during ramadan. hundreds of stalls selling kebabs, malpua (fried sweet pancakes), phiri (a sweet milk dish served only during ramzan), haleem, nihari, nalli paya, and dozen other dishes.
outside ramzan, the regular stalls are still excellent. the seekh kebabs here are better than most restaurant kebabs. the malpua dripping with rabri is sinful. the nalli nihari (bone marrow stew) slow-cooked overnight is served for breakfast and it’s transformative.
specific stalls to find: the seekh kebab stall near minara masjid, the malpua guy opposite suleiman bakery, the paya stall that’s been there for three generations (ask anyone, they’ll point).
pair this with a walk down to crawford market’s khau galli for the full south mumbai street food experience.
verdict: best street food area in mumbai. during ramzan, best in india. non-negotiable.
more gems
9. khau galli (crawford market)
crawford market / rs 50-200 / 8/10
”khau galli” literally means “food lane.” the one near crawford market has been feeding fort’s office workers since forever. you’ll find everything here - dosas, sandwiches, frankie rolls, chinese, pav bhaji, falooda. it’s a buffet of small stalls.
the quality varies. stick to the stalls with the longest queues - that’s the universal street food rule.
verdict: best variety in one lane. perfect for groups who can’t agree on one cuisine.
10. swati snacks
tardeo / rs 200-400 / 8/10
technically a restaurant, but i’m including it because the food is elevated street food. swati does gujarati and mumbai snacks - panki (thin rice pancakes steamed in banana leaf), dahi batata puri, sev usal. everything is clean, hygienic, and meticulously prepared.
it’s more expensive than actual street food but the quality is genuinely higher. good option if you want street food flavors without standing on a footpath.
verdict: street food made premium. clean, consistent, excellent flavors.
11. guru kripa
sion / rs 80-120 / 8/10
the misal pav here is some of the spiciest in mumbai. misal is a sprout curry topped with farsan (crispy mixture), served with pav. maharashtrian breakfast staple. guru kripa makes the tarri (spicy gravy) extra hot.
last time i tried it, my eyes watered by the third bite. i ordered another plate. that’s the sign of good misal.
verdict: best misal pav in mumbai. bring water. lots of water.
15. hearsch bakery
fort / rs 20-50 / 7.5/10
parsi bakery that’s been in fort since forever. the khari biscuit (flaky puff pastry biscuit) is what every mumbai office worker dunks in their chai. the mawa cake is dense, buttery, and perfect with cutting chai.
rs 20 for a khari biscuit and rs 30 for a mawa cake. mumbai’s cheapest quality snack.
verdict: essential mumbai bakery. the khari biscuit is a cultural artifact.
18. taj ice cream
mohammed ali road / rs 50-120 / 8/10
at taj ice cream, you don’t get scoops. you get slabs. the ice cream is set in steel containers and cut into slices with a knife. sitaphal (custard apple), mango, and malai are the classics.
the texture is different from regular ice cream - denser, creamier, almost like frozen kulfi but smoother. the sitaphal flavor during season is genuinely one of the best frozen desserts in india.
verdict: mumbai’s most unique ice cream experience. the sitaphal flavor is seasonal, so time your visit right.
the optimal street food route
if you have one day for mumbai street food, here’s the route:
morning (9am): start at ashwin vada pav in dadar. breakfast sorted. rs 20.
late morning (11am): head to matunga for south indian breakfast at ram ashray if you’re still hungry. rs 100.
afternoon (1pm): crawford market khau galli for lunch. explore and eat what looks good. rs 150.
evening (5pm): girgaon chowpatty. cannon pav bhaji + vithal bhelwala bhel puri. watch the sunset. rs 180.
night (9pm): mohammed ali road for kebabs and malpua. finish with taj ice cream. rs 300.
total damage: approximately rs 750. you’ve eaten your way through 5 areas and 8+ dishes. your stomach is full, your wallet is intact, and you understand why mumbai’s street food is the best in india.
