tl;dr: honest guide to 10 trusted jewellery shops in patna with gold rates, making charges, diamond prices, and silver options. from tanishq to local family jewellers.

tldr: for gold jewellery in patna, lalji jewellers in hathua market has the lowest making charges (8-12%) and multi-decade trust. tanishq on boring road is the safest bet for certified purity and buyback guarantees. for diamonds, tanishq and reliance jewels. for silver, silver palace kankarbagh. for fashion jewellery, zari gallery in mauryalok. family has been buying from lalji for three generations. full breakdown of 10 shops below.

jewellery shopping in patna is one of those things where trust matters more than anything else.

you’re spending lakhs. you need to know the gold is pure. you need to know the making charges aren’t inflated. you need to know that the 4-gram earring actually weighs 4 grams and not 3.6 grams with a convenient “wastage” explanation. and you need to know that if something goes wrong, the shop will stand behind what they sold.

this is where patna’s local jewellers have historically had an advantage. many of these shops have been around for decades. they survive on reputation, word-of-mouth, and repeat customers. my family has been buying from some of these shops for three generations. the jeweller knows us, we know them, and that relationship is worth more than any certification.

but the market is changing. national brands like tanishq, kalyan, and joyalukkas have entered patna. they offer certified purity, standardized pricing, and buyback guarantees. the trade-off is higher making charges and less flexibility on pricing.

this guide covers both. the trusted locals and the national brands. based on where my family actually shops, conversations with relatives and friends in patna, and my own research into pricing and certifications.

if you’re looking at broader shopping in patna, the wholesale markets guide covers bulk buying options and the hathua market guide goes deep on patna’s biggest shopping hub.

understanding gold pricing in patna

before getting into individual shops, you need to understand how gold pricing works. this saves you from overpaying and helps you compare across shops.

the components of gold jewellery price

1. gold rate (base price) this is the same nationally and fluctuates daily based on international gold prices. as of early 2026:

  • 24 karat (999 purity): approximately rs 7,400-7,800 per gram
  • 22 karat (916 purity): approximately rs 6,800-7,200 per gram
  • 18 karat (750 purity): approximately rs 5,500-5,900 per gram

most gold jewellery in india is 22 karat (916 hallmark). 24 karat is too soft for jewellery. 18 karat is used for diamond-studded and western designs.

2. making charges this is where shops differ significantly. making charges cover the cost of crafting the jewellery, labor, design, and the shop’s margin. they’re charged as either:

  • percentage of gold value: 8-25% of the gold value. local patna shops charge 8-14%, branded showrooms 14-25%.
  • per gram flat rate: some shops charge a flat rs 400-800 per gram. this is becoming less common.

3. wastage some shops add a “wastage” charge of 2-5%, claiming gold is lost during the making process. legitimate wastage in modern jewellery making is under 2% for most designs. anything above 3% is the shop padding their margin. reputable shops in patna have largely moved away from separate wastage charges.

4. gst 3% gst on gold value + 5% gst on making charges. this is standard and non-negotiable.

how to calculate

example: a 10-gram 22k gold chain at rs 7,000 per gram with 10% making charges:

  • gold value: 10 x 7,000 = rs 70,000
  • making charges: 10% of 70,000 = rs 7,000
  • gst on gold: 3% of 70,000 = rs 2,100
  • gst on making: 5% of 7,000 = rs 350
  • total: rs 79,450

the same chain with 20% making charges: rs 86,100. the difference is rs 6,650, or roughly 8%.

this is why making charges matter more than which shop has a “special offer.”

the shops - detailed reviews

1. lalji jewellers

hathua market / making charges: 8-12% / 9/10

lalji jewellers is the family jeweller for half of patna. i’m not exaggerating. ask any established patna family where they buy gold and lalji comes up more often than not.

the shop has been in hathua market since the 1950s and has survived purely on reputation. the making charges are among the lowest in patna (8-12% depending on design complexity). the gold purity is reliable because they know that one bad experience means losing a family that’s bought from them for three generations.

the collection is traditional. heavy wedding sets, mangalsutra, bangles, chains, earrings, rings, and necklaces in designs that bihari families have been buying for decades. the traditional bihari wedding jewellery, sitahari (a forehead ornament), hansuli (thick collar necklace), bajuband (armband), is still made here by in-house karigars who know these designs from muscle memory.

my family has bought multiple wedding sets from lalji. the process is old-school: sit down, have chai, discuss requirements, look at designs, negotiate making charges, finalize. they don’t rush you and they don’t push you toward higher-margin pieces. the relationship matters to them.

the catch: the shop is not air-conditioned (it’s hathua market). the designs lean traditional, so if you want contemporary or western-influenced styles, this isn’t the right place. no buyback guarantee in the branded sense, though they do accept old gold for exchange at current rates.

best for: gold wedding sets, traditional designs, lowest making charges, long-term relationship.

2. tanishq

boring road, patliputra colony / making charges: 14-22% / 8.5/10

tanishq is a tata brand and the most trusted corporate jeweller in india. their boring road showroom is well-stocked and the patliputra branch is newer and less crowded.

the value proposition with tanishq is simple: certified purity (karatmeter tested in front of you), transparent pricing (making charges are listed on each item), buyback guarantee (they’ll buy back any tanishq piece at full gold value minus 2% deduction), and exchange policy (exchange old tanishq gold at full value or non-tanishq gold at prevailing rates minus deduction).

the diamond collection is where tanishq genuinely outshines local shops. their solitaires come with certification (IGI or GIA for higher-value pieces), the designs are contemporary, and the quality control is consistent. for diamond engagement rings and earrings, tanishq is probably the safest option in patna.

the gold designs are a mix of traditional and contemporary. their “divyam” collection has south indian temple jewellery designs, “rivaah” has wedding jewellery, and they regularly launch trend-driven collections. the variety is wider than any single local shop.

the catch: making charges of 14-22% are significantly higher than local shops. on a 20-gram wedding necklace, you’d pay rs 15,000-20,000 more in making charges at tanishq vs lalji. the buyback guarantee partially offsets this but only if you sell back to tanishq.

what to know: they run “golden harvest” savings schemes where you pay monthly installments and get a bonus amount at the end. this is genuinely a good deal if you’re planning a wedding purchase 6-12 months out. the boring road showroom gets crowded on weekends. visit on a weekday.

best for: certified purity, diamond jewellery, buyback guarantee, first-time buyers who value brand trust.

3. joyalukkas

boring road / making charges: 10-18% / 8/10

joyalukkas is a south indian jewellery chain that’s expanded aggressively across india. the boring road showroom is large, well-stocked, and competitive on pricing.

their edge in patna is the combination of brand trust with slightly lower making charges than tanishq. joyalukkas typically charges 10-18% depending on the collection and design complexity. their gold wedding collections are extensive and the designs bridge traditional and modern well.

the “pride” diamond collection is decent. not as wide as tanishq but the prices are often 5-10% lower for comparable designs and quality. they also have a good range of lightweight daily-wear gold jewellery in the 2-5 gram range, which is where most everyday purchases happen.

joyalukkas offers a buyback guarantee similar to tanishq (at gold value minus a small deduction). they also run savings schemes.

the catch: the south indian design influence is noticeable. their wedding sets lean toward the heavier, more ornate styles popular in south india. for specifically bihari wedding designs, you’d still need to go to lalji or the hathua market karigars.

best for: competitive pricing on branded gold, wedding jewellery, south indian designs.

4. kalyan jewellers

bailey road / making charges: 12-20% / 7.5/10

kalyan jewellers has a presence on bailey road. another south indian chain that’s expanded nationally, backed by celebrity endorsements and aggressive marketing.

the store is large and the collection is extensive. gold, diamond, platinum, and silver. they stock multiple collections targeting different price points and aesthetics. the “tejasvi” collection has polki-inspired designs, “mudhra” has south indian temple jewellery, and they have specific bridal collections.

making charges at kalyan are 12-20%, placing them between joyalukkas and tanishq. the gold purity is certified (BIS hallmark) and they offer buyback and exchange policies.

my take: a competent option but nothing that specifically stands out in patna’s market. the bailey road location is convenient for people living in that part of the city, but if you’re making a special trip for jewellery, lalji for value or tanishq for certification are better choices.

best for: bailey road residents, wide variety in one showroom.

5. reliance jewels

fraser road / making charges: 12-18% / 7.5/10

reliance jewels is the ambani group’s jewellery play. the fraser road location is accessible and the store is well-maintained.

where reliance jewels stands out in patna is their diamond collection. they source well, the certification is reliable (they use IGI-certified stones), and their daily-wear diamond jewellery (studs, pendants, thin bracelets) is competitively priced. for a pair of diamond studs in the rs 15,000-40,000 range, they often beat tanishq on price for similar quality.

their gold collection is decent but not as extensive as tanishq or joyalukkas. the making charges are reasonable at 12-18%.

best for: diamond jewellery, daily-wear pieces, competitive diamond pricing.

6. silver palace

kankarbagh / per gram + making / 8/10

silver jewellery is a whole separate market in patna, and silver palace in kankarbagh is one of the most trusted names.

silver rates fluctuate around rs 90-100 per gram (as of early 2026). making charges for silver jewellery range from rs 50-200 per gram depending on design complexity. the total cost of silver jewellery is dramatically lower than gold, making it popular for daily wear, gifting, and younger buyers.

silver palace stocks an impressive range: anklets (payal), toe rings (bichiya), bangles, chains, pendants, rings, earrings, and traditional silver items like the kamarbandh (waist chain) worn in bihari weddings. the designs range from traditional to contemporary.

for bihari weddings specifically, certain silver items are part of the traditional trousseau. silver palace knows these designs and stocks them ready-made or can custom-make them within a few days.

what to know: silver jewellery tarnishes over time but can be cleaned easily. ask the shop for a polishing cloth with your purchase. german silver and oxidized silver items (which are trendy right now) are different from pure silver, make sure you know what you’re buying.

best for: silver jewellery, traditional wedding silver, daily wear, budget-conscious buyers.

7. malabar gold and diamonds

patliputra colony / making charges: 12-18% / 7.5/10

another south indian chain, malabar gold has set up shop in patliputra colony. their strength is their bridal collection. the “mine” diamond collection and “precia” gemstone collections are well-curated.

the patliputra location means it’s more accessible and less crowded than boring road showrooms. the store is spacious with proper security (jewellery shops in malls and colonies invest more in security infrastructure than market shops).

making charges and pricing are competitive with joyalukkas and kalyan. they offer similar savings schemes and buyback policies. the gold jewellery collection is adequate but the diamond range is where they compete effectively.

best for: bridal jewellery, diamond collections, patliputra colony residents.

8. local karigars (artisan jewellers)

hathua market and surrounding areas / making charges: 8-15% / 8/10

hathua market isn’t just retail shops. there are dozens of small karigar (artisan) workshops in the lanes behind and around the main market. these karigars make custom jewellery to order.

if you want a specific design, whether from a photo, a family heirloom you want replicated, or a traditional bihari wedding piece, the hathua market karigars are your best option. they work with gold, silver, and even kundan and meenakari techniques.

the process: you bring the gold (buy from a trusted shop and bring it to the karigar, or the karigar buys gold and bills you at market rate + making). the karigar makes the piece based on your design requirements. making charges are rs 300-600 per gram or 8-15% of gold value, depending on design complexity.

the risk: there’s no brand trust or certification. you need to either know the karigar personally or go through a trusted referral. the horror stories about karigars swapping gold or underweighting pieces exist, though they’re the minority. my family has used the same karigar for decades, referred through extended family. if you don’t have a personal connection, stick to the established shops.

what to know: delivery time is 3-15 days depending on design complexity. always weigh the gold going in and the finished piece coming out. get BIS hallmarking done on the finished piece (any hallmarking center can do this for a small fee).

best for: custom designs, traditional bihari wedding jewellery, replicating family heirlooms.

9. shree jewellers

kankarbagh / making charges: 10-14% / 7.5/10

a reliable local jeweller in kankarbagh that serves the area’s residential community. shree jewellers doesn’t have the multi-generational reputation of lalji but they’ve built a solid local following over the past couple of decades.

the collection is a mix of gold and silver, with a focus on daily-wear lightweight jewellery. rings, earrings, chains, and small pendants in the 1-5 gram range. their making charges (10-14%) are competitive and they’re transparent about pricing.

they also stock some diamond jewellery, though the range is limited compared to the branded showrooms. for basic diamond studs and pendants, they offer good value.

best for: kankarbagh residents, lightweight daily wear, local trust.

10. zari gallery

mauryalok / fixed prices / 7/10

including this because not everyone is buying gold. fashion jewellery and imitation jewellery are a significant market, especially for younger buyers, students, and anyone who wants variety without the investment.

zari gallery in mauryalok stocks fashion jewellery, oxidized pieces, kundan-style imitation sets, jhumkas, statement necklaces, and accessories. prices range from rs 200 for simple earrings to rs 3,000 for elaborate sets.

the quality is what you’d expect from fashion jewellery. it’s not meant to last generations. but for everyday wear, college, events, and experimenting with styles, it serves its purpose.

what to know: there are multiple fashion jewellery shops in mauryalok and the nearby areas. zari gallery is one of the better-curated ones but shop around. the patna women’s college area also has small shops with trendy fashion jewellery.

best for: fashion jewellery, budget accessories, younger buyers.

gold buying tips for patna

1. always check the hallmark. since june 2021, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in india. the hallmark includes the BIS logo, purity (916 for 22k, 750 for 18k), the hallmarking center’s number, and a 6-digit HUID (hallmark unique identification number). scan the HUID on the BIS care app to verify.

2. compare making charges, not gold rates. every shop in patna sells gold at roughly the same per-gram rate. the difference in your bill comes from making charges. a 5% difference in making charges on a 50-gram wedding set is rs 25,000+.

3. negotiate making charges. at local shops, making charges are negotiable. at branded showrooms, they’re mostly fixed but you can sometimes get a reduction during promotional periods. always ask “what’s the best you can do on making charges” before finalizing.

4. be careful with “wastage.” if a shop charges separate wastage on top of making charges, ask them to justify it. modern jewellery-making techniques have minimal actual wastage. reputable shops have either eliminated wastage charges or included them in making charges.

5. weigh everything yourself. take your own digital scale or insist on the shop weighing pieces on a calibrated scale in front of you. this isn’t rude, it’s standard practice and any reputable shop will do it without hesitation.

6. get an itemized bill. the bill should clearly show: weight, gold rate per gram, total gold value, making charges (amount and percentage), gst breakdown, and final total. if any of these are missing, ask for them.

7. understand buyback vs exchange. buyback means the shop buys your gold back from you. exchange means you trade old gold for new jewellery. the deductions are different. tanishq, joyalukkas, and other branded shops have clear policies. local shops handle this on a case-by-case basis.

8. for wedding shopping, start early. wedding jewellery in patna is typically bought 1-3 months before the wedding. this gives time for custom orders, alterations, and hunting for the best deals. don’t leave it to the last week.

the cost of jewellery in patna vs metros

the gold rate is national, so the per-gram price is the same in patna as in mumbai. but the total cost of jewellery is 5-15% lower in patna because:

  1. making charges at local shops (8-12%) are lower than metro city rates (15-25%)
  2. rent and operational costs are lower, so shops don’t need to charge as much
  3. competition in hathua market keeps prices honest
  4. the culture of haggling over making charges is more accepted than in organized retail

this is why many bihari families living in metros still come back to patna for wedding jewellery shopping. the savings on a wedding set can run into lakhs.
