tl;dr: honest guide to finding tuition in patna. home tutors, coaching centers, online platforms, and rates by class. rs 500-3000/month depending on class and subject.

tldr: for class 1-8, find a local tuition teacher through word-of-mouth (rs 500-1,500/month per subject). for class 9-12 boards, experienced BSEB teachers charge rs 1,000-3,000/month and deliver results. for competitive exams, stick to coaching centers. online platforms like superprof and vedantu are solid alternatives. full breakdown of rates, platforms, and how to find the right tutor below.

bihar is where i’m from. education is basically religion in patna.

every lane in kankarbagh has at least three tuition teachers. boring road and its bylanes are unofficial tuition hubs. and in boring canal road, the density of tuition boards and coaching signboards per kilometer probably rivals kota.

my younger cousins have been through the whole cycle. tuition for boards, coaching for competitive exams, home tutors for weak subjects. relatives regularly ask each other for tutor recommendations. it’s the most common conversation at family gatherings after “shaadi kab hai.”

so i compiled everything. talked to family members, their kids, neighbors in patna, and checked online platforms. here’s the honest guide to finding tuition in patna, what to pay, and what to avoid.

rates are per subject per month. most students take 2-4 subjects. group tuition = 5-15 students per batch. these are 2026 averages across different areas of patna.

how to find good tuition teachers in patna

1. word of mouth (still the best method)

this is patna. the most reliable way to find a tutor is still asking your neighbors, relatives, and your kid’s classmates’ parents. every housing society in boring road, kankarbagh, and bailey road has parents who can recommend tutors they’ve used.

my aunt’s approach: she asks three different families whose kids scored well in boards, finds the common name, and that’s the tutor. it’s crude but it works.

why this works: online reviews can be fake. but if three families in your area all say “sharma sir in lane 4 is excellent for math,” that’s real data.

2. online platforms

if you’re new to patna or don’t have a local network, these platforms help:

superprof - the best platform for finding individual tutors in patna. you can filter by subject, class, area, and price. most tutors list their qualifications, experience, and rates. the first trial session is often free. patna has 200+ listed tutors across subjects.

tutor india - similar to superprof but more india-focused. good for finding home tutors specifically. they verify tutor credentials, which adds a layer of trust. rates are slightly higher because the platform takes a commission.

urbanpro - was the go-to platform a few years ago. still functional but the quality of listings has dropped. worth checking but verify tutors independently before committing.

vedantu - for online tuition. live 1-on-1 sessions with experienced teachers. works well for class 9-12. rates start at rs 800/month per subject for group sessions and rs 2,000+ for individual sessions. the advantage is you get teachers from across india, including iit/nit graduates.

unacademy - better for competitive exam prep (IIT-JEE, NEET) than for board exam tuition. their plus subscription gives you access to live classes, doubt-solving, and test series. rs 1,200-3,000/month depending on the plan.

byju’s - controversial but functional. the tablet-based learning works for some kids and doesn’t work for others. the main issue is the aggressive sales approach and long-term contracts. if you’re considering byju’s, start with the free content on youtube first before committing to a paid plan. avoid the multi-year packages.

3. facebook and local groups

search for “patna tuition teachers” or “home tutor patna” on facebook. there are active groups with 5,000-15,000 members where tutors post their availability and parents post requirements. the quality is unfiltered, so verify credentials yourself.

4. school and coaching center notice boards

schools like st. michael’s, don bosco, notre dame, and dav often have notice boards where tutors advertise. coaching centers on boring canal road also have connections with individual tutors who can handle specific weak areas that the coaching doesn’t cover.

best tuition areas and hubs in patna

boring road and boring canal road

the tuition capital of patna. the bylanes between boring road and boring canal road are packed with tuition teachers running group batches from their homes. subjects covered: everything from class 1 to class 12, plus competitive exam prep.

why it’s the hub: proximity to coaching centers (aakash, allen, motion), good residential population of teachers, and well-connected by road. if you live anywhere in central patna, this is where you’ll find the most options.

notable tutors (based on local reputation): several ex-teachers from patna central school and st. michael’s run tuition here. math and physics tutors on boring canal road are particularly well-regarded for class 11-12 science.

kankarbagh

the second-biggest tuition hub. 90 feet road and its surrounding lanes have numerous group tuition centers. many retired teachers from government schools teach here, charging lower rates than boring road tutors.

advantage: slightly cheaper than boring road. rs 800-1,500/month for class 9-10 compared to rs 1,000-2,000 in boring road.

rajendra nagar

growing tuition hub, especially for students preparing for BPSC and other state exams. for school-level tuition, the options are fewer than boring road and kankarbagh, but they’re developing.

patliputra colony and bailey road

premium residential area, premium tutor rates. home tutors here charge 20-30% more than kankarbagh because the parents can afford it and the tutors know it. the quality is generally good though, many tutors here are current or former professors from patna university and an college.

coaching vs tuition: which one does your kid need?

this is the question every patna parent agonizes over. let me break it down clearly:

go with tuition if:

  • your child needs help with board exams (BSEB class 10 or 12)
  • they have specific weak subjects that need focused attention
  • they need personalized doubt-solving that coaching centers can’t provide
  • they’re in class 1-8 and need academic support
  • your budget is limited (tuition is 40-60% cheaper than coaching)

go with coaching if:

  • your child is preparing for competitive exams (IIT-JEE, NEET, CLAT)
  • they need test series and mock exams with ranking
  • they’re self-motivated and can handle large batch environments
  • you want a structured, long-term program (2-3 years)

do both if:

  • your child is in class 11-12 science and wants both boards and competitive exams
  • the coaching handles competitive prep, the tuition handles board subjects
  • this is common in patna: coaching for physics/chem/math (competitive level) and tuition for english and hindi (board level)

my take: most kids in patna don’t need coaching until class 9-10. before that, a good tuition teacher is more than enough. the trend of putting class 6 kids in coaching is just parental anxiety and coaching centers making money. let kids be kids until class 8. start serious prep from class 9 at the earliest.

for coaching centers specifically, read my guide to best BPSC coaching in patna if that’s the goal.

what to look for in a tuition teacher

based on what’s worked for my cousins and relatives’ kids:

1. BSEB board pattern knowledge

for class 10 and 12, the BSEB exam pattern is specific. question paper style, marking scheme, and internal choice patterns change periodically. a good tuition teacher knows the current pattern inside out and trains students accordingly. ask them about the latest pattern changes before enrolling.

2. track record

ask for previous students’ board results. a good tutor will proudly share them. if they dodge the question, that’s a red flag. in patna, the best tutors have waiting lists because their results speak.

3. batch size

for group tuition, 5-10 students is ideal. anything above 15 becomes a mini coaching center and you lose the personalization that makes tuition valuable. some popular tutors in boring road run batches of 30-40. at that point, you’re paying tuition rates for a coaching experience.

4. teaching method

the best tutors don’t just lecture. they assign daily practice problems, conduct weekly tests, check copies, and give individual feedback. if a tutor just talks for an hour and sends your kid home, that’s a waste.

5. availability for doubts

patna’s best tutors are accessible on whatsapp for doubt-solving between sessions. this is a game-changer, especially before exams. ask about this upfront.

subject-wise recommendations

mathematics (class 9-12)

the most in-demand subject for tuition in patna. good math tutors have waiting lists.

what to look for: a tutor who emphasizes problem-solving over theory. BSEB math papers reward speed and accuracy. practice, practice, practice.

rate: rs 1,200-2,500/month for class 9-10, rs 1,500-3,000 for class 11-12.

tip from my cousin: “the tutor who makes you solve 50 problems in a week is better than the one who explains concepts beautifully but doesn’t give homework.”

science (class 9-10)

physics and chemistry combined, or separate tutors. for BSEB class 10, combined is fine. for class 11-12, you’ll need separate tutors for physics, chemistry, and biology/math.

rate: rs 1,000-2,000/month for combined class 9-10 science.

english

surprisingly hard to find good english tutors in patna. most tuition teachers focus on hindi-medium subjects. for english, online platforms like vedantu are actually a better option because you get access to teachers from metros.

rate: rs 800-1,500/month locally, rs 1,000-2,000 online.

hindi and social science

the most affordable subjects for tuition. many tutors bundle hindi + social science at a combined rate.

rate: rs 500-1,200/month per subject for class 9-10.

competitive exam subjects (IIT/NEET level)

for IIT-JEE physics, chemistry, and math at the competitive level, you need specialized tutors or coaching. individual tutors who can teach at this level charge rs 3,000-8,000/month per subject. most families opt for coaching centers (allen, aakash, motion) for this, with supplementary tuition for weak areas.

online tuition: does it work in patna?

short answer: yes, if your internet is reliable and your kid is in class 9+.

the covid years proved that online tuition works. many tutors in patna still offer online batches alongside in-person ones. the advantage: you get more choices, including teachers from outside patna.

platforms that work well:

  • vedantu for 1-on-1 and small group sessions
  • unacademy for competitive exam prep
  • zoom/google meet sessions with local tutors (many boring road tutors now offer this)
  • youtube channels for free supplementary learning (physics wallah, mohit tyagi for competitive math)

the main challenge: internet. if your broadband is unreliable, online tuition becomes frustrating. check my guide to best broadband in patna before committing to online classes. jio fiber and airtel xstream are the most stable options currently.

red flags to watch out for

  1. ”guaranteed results” claims. no tutor can guarantee a specific score. if they promise “90% guaranteed,” run. learning depends on the student too.

  2. large batches marketed as “personal attention.” if there are 25 students in a room and the tutor calls it personalized coaching, it’s not.

  3. advance payment demands. good tutors are fine with monthly payments. if someone demands 6 months or a year’s fees upfront, that’s a red flag. pay monthly and retain the flexibility to switch.

  4. no test or assessment schedule. a tutor who never tests your kid’s progress is just going through the motions. regular assessments are non-negotiable.

  5. parents not allowed to observe. any legitimate tutor should be okay with a parent sitting in on a session occasionally, especially in the first week.

the final word

patna runs on tuition. it’s woven into the city’s educational culture. and honestly, with class sizes of 60-80 in many schools, tuition fills a genuine gap.

for class 1-8: find a local neighborhood tutor through word-of-mouth. rs 500-1,200/month per subject is fair. for class 9-10 boards: invest in an experienced BSEB-focused tutor. rs 1,000-2,500/month per subject. boring road and kankarbagh have the best options. for class 11-12: combine coaching (for competitive) with tuition (for boards). budget rs 3,000-5,000/month total. for online: vedantu for boards, unacademy for competitive. make sure your internet is solid first.

the most important thing isn’t the platform or the price. it’s finding a teacher who genuinely cares about your kid’s learning and not just about filling batch seats.
