tldr: out of 17 bakeries, my top picks are glen’s bakehouse (best overall - sourdough, cakes, everything), lavonne (best artisanal/french technique), amma’s pastries (best budget bakery), and theobroma (best chocolate cakes). full reviews with prices and what to order below.

i haven’t visited bangalore specifically for a bakery tour yet. this guide is based on extensive research - local food blogs, google reviews, youtube reviews, and recommendations from bangalore locals who are genuinely obsessed with baked goods.

bangalore’s bakery scene is surprisingly strong. the city has a combination of old-school local bakeries (the kind that have been selling puffs and plum cakes for decades), modern artisanal bakeries with french-trained bakers, and national chains that have found a massive audience here. the cafe culture that bangalore is known for has driven a parallel rise in quality baking - when everyone is drinking specialty coffee, the pastry next to it needs to be good too.

the range is huge. you can get an excellent croissant for rs 150 at lavonne or a perfectly satisfying puff pastry for rs 30 at amma’s. both are valid. both have their place. this guide covers the full spectrum.

the awards (my picks)

  • best overall bakery: glen’s bakehouse, indiranagar - consistently excellent across every category

premium artisanal bakeries

these are the bakeries where baking is taken seriously as a craft. french techniques, proper fermentation, premium ingredients. you pay more, but you taste the difference.

1. glen’s bakehouse

indiranagar, 12th main (also whitefield) / price range: rs 150-500 per item / 9/10

glen’s bakehouse is bangalore’s default bakery. when someone says “let’s pick up cake,” they mean glen’s. when a startup orders pastries for their office, it’s glen’s. when you need a birthday cake, a box of cookies, sourdough for the week, or just a really good sandwich - it’s glen’s.

the range is what makes them special. the sourdough is properly fermented with a good crust and tangy crumb. the cakes are beautifully decorated and taste as good as they look - the red velvet and chocolate truffle are the bestsellers but the lemon cake is the sleeper hit. the croissants are buttery and flaky. the sandwiches use their own bread and are legitimately great lunches. the cookies are chunky and generously portioned.

the indiranagar outlet is a full cafe with seating, so you can eat in or take away. it gets crowded on weekends, especially around brunch time. they also have a bar section with cocktails and wine, which turns the evening crowd into more of a restaurant situation.

pricing is premium - a sourdough loaf runs rs 250-350, a cake slice is rs 200-300, a croissant is rs 150-200. but for the quality, it’s justified.

what to get: sourdough loaf, red velvet cake slice, almond croissant, any sandwich on sourdough.

verdict: the best all-around bakery in bangalore. not the cheapest, but consistently excellent across every category.

2. lavonne

st mark’s road (also whitefield) / price range: rs 200-600 per item / 9/10

lavonne is bangalore’s most technically impressive bakery. founded by a french-trained pastry chef, it’s where bangalore’s baking standards reach their ceiling. the croissants here are the best in the city - proper laminated dough, golden, shattering on the outside, layers of buttery softness inside. if you’ve had croissants in paris, these are the closest you’ll find in india.

beyond croissants, the pastry counter is stunning. eclairs, tarts, entremets, macarons - all made with precision that borders on obsessive. the chocolate tart is rich and perfectly balanced. the seasonal fruit tarts are works of art. the macarons have the right texture (crispy shell, chewy centre) that most indian bakeries can’t achieve.

lavonne also runs a baking academy, which tells you something about how seriously they take the craft.

the catch: it’s the most expensive bakery on this list. a single pastry can run rs 300-500. a small celebration cake starts at rs 1500-2000. the st mark’s road outlet is small and can have queues on weekends.

what to get: butter croissant, chocolate tart, any seasonal fruit tart, macarons.

verdict: the best artisanal bakery in bangalore. the croissant alone is worth the trip. come here when quality matters more than price.

3. smoor

indiranagar, koramangala, ub city / price range: rs 200-800 per item / 8.5/10

smoor is bangalore’s luxury chocolate brand. they make single-origin chocolate from scratch (bean to bar) and use it across cakes, pastries, hot chocolate, and boxed chocolates. the quality is genuinely world-class - this isn’t indian chocolate trying to be fancy, it’s proper artisanal chocolate that happens to be made in bangalore.

the chocolate truffle cake is their most popular item and it’s dense, rich, and intensely chocolatey. the hot chocolate is thick and decadent. the bonbons and truffles make excellent gifts. the croissant with chocolate filling is indulgent.

pricing is luxury-tier. a cake slice runs rs 300-500. a box of chocolates starts at rs 800. it’s a treat, not an everyday purchase.

what to get: chocolate truffle cake, hot chocolate, a box of bonbons for gifting.

verdict: the best chocolate experience in bangalore. expensive but genuinely excellent.

4. la briche

koramangala / price range: rs 200-500 per item / 8/10

la briche is a french-style patisserie in koramangala that flies under the radar compared to lavonne and glen’s, but the quality is quietly excellent. the croissants, pain au chocolat, and danish pastries are all well-executed. the quiches are genuinely good - the lorraine is the classic pick.

the cafe space is small and charming, with a very parisian cafe feel. the coffee is decent. it’s the kind of place where you sit with a croissant and a coffee on a quiet morning and feel like you’re in a different city.

what to get: pain au chocolat, quiche lorraine, almond croissant.

verdict: the under-the-radar french bakery. less famous than lavonne, nearly as good for pastries.

everyday favourites

these bakeries are where bangalore actually eats on a daily basis. less artisanal, more practical, and much easier on the wallet.

5. amma’s pastries

multiple outlets across bangalore / price range: rs 30-150 per item / 8.5/10

amma’s pastries is to bangalore what a good local bakery is to every indian city - the place you go to without thinking about it. need a quick snack? amma’s. picking up a cake for a colleague’s birthday? amma’s. want a puff pastry after work? amma’s.

the puffs (chicken, egg, paneer) are the bestsellers and they’re consistently good - flaky pastry, decent filling, properly hot. the cakes are reliable if unexciting - they won’t wow you, but they’ll satisfy a craving. the dilkush (a sweet bun with tutti-frutti and coconut) is a nostalgia item that has a loyal following.

the pricing is what makes amma’s special. a puff for rs 30-40. a cake slice for rs 60-100. a full cake starting at rs 300-400. this is accessible baking.

what to get: chicken puff, egg puff, dilkush, any cake slice.

verdict: the best everyday bakery in bangalore. not fancy, just reliable and affordable.

6. theobroma

indiranagar, koramangala / price range: rs 100-400 per item / 8.5/10

theobroma is the mumbai import that’s conquered bangalore. their chocolate cakes, brownies, and cookies have a consistent quality that’s hard to argue with. the sinful chocolate cake is their flagship - dense, moist, and overwhelmingly chocolatey. the brownies are fudgy and rich. the overloaded cookies are massive.

they’ve found the sweet spot between artisanal quality and accessible pricing. a brownie is rs 100-150. a cake slice is rs 150-250. it’s more expensive than amma’s but noticeably better quality, and more affordable than glen’s or lavonne.

what to get: sinful chocolate cake slice, brownie, overloaded cookie.

verdict: the best mid-range bakery in bangalore. reliable chocolate-forward bakes at reasonable prices.

7. magnolia bakery

indiranagar / price range: rs 200-500 per item / 8/10

the famous new york bakery that made banana pudding a thing has a bangalore outpost, and it’s surprisingly good. the banana pudding is the star - creamy, with real banana flavour and vanilla wafer layers. it’s genuinely as good as the reviews suggest.

beyond the pudding, the cupcakes are well-made (the red velvet is the most ordered), the cookies are decent, and the banana cake is excellent. the space is cheerful and pink, very on-brand.

the catch: it’s expensive for what it is. a single cupcake is rs 250-350. a small banana pudding is rs 300+. you’re paying the international brand premium.

what to get: banana pudding (non-negotiable), red velvet cupcake, banana cake.

verdict: the banana pudding lives up to the hype. everything else is good but overpriced.

8. hole in the wall cafe

koramangala, 6th block / price range: rs 100-350 per item / 8/10

hole in the wall is a cafe first, but their baked goods deserve a spot on this list. the cookies are the standout - thick, chunky, slightly underbaked in the centre (in the best way). the chocolate chip cookie and the double chocolate cookie are addictive. the brownies are good too.

the sandwiches use fresh bread and are legitimately great lunch options. the space is cozy and work-friendly. it straddles the line between cafe and bakery perfectly.

what to get: chocolate chip cookie, double chocolate cookie, any sandwich.

verdict: the best cookies in bangalore. come for a cookie and a coffee, leave an hour later after eating three.

heritage and old-school bakeries

bangalore’s bakery history goes back to the colonial era. these places have been around for decades and have loyal followings.

9. thoms bakery

frazer town / price range: rs 30-200 per item / 8/10

thoms bakery in frazer town is a bangalore institution. it’s been around for decades, serving the kind of baked goods that remind you of old india - plum cakes, puffs, bread rolls, and fruit cakes. the plum cake is their specialty, especially during christmas when the queues wrap around the block.

the pricing is old-school honest. a puff is rs 30-40. the plum cake is rs 150-200 per piece. there’s no cafe seating - you buy and go. it’s a bakery in the truest sense.

what to get: plum cake (especially during christmas), puffs, bread rolls.

verdict: the best old-school bakery in bangalore. the plum cake is legendary.

10. albert bakery

commercial street area / price range: rs 20-100 per item / 7.5/10

albert bakery near commercial street is another heritage bakery that’s been around for ages. the buns, puffs, and breads are simple, fresh, and incredibly cheap. this is working-class bangalore baking - honest food at honest prices. the cream buns and the chicken puffs are the popular picks.

what to get: cream buns, chicken puffs, any fresh bread.

verdict: the cheapest bakery on this list that still delivers quality. heritage bangalore.

specialty and artisanal bread

11. amintiri

hsr layout / price range: rs 150-400 per item / 8/10

amintiri focuses on artisanal bread and healthy baking. their sourdough is excellent - proper long fermentation, good crust, open crumb. they also do whole wheat breads, multigrain loaves, and other health-conscious options without making them taste like cardboard.

the philosophy is clean ingredients, no preservatives, small batches. the pricing reflects this (rs 250-400 per loaf), but the quality justifies it if you care about what goes into your bread.

what to get: sourdough loaf, whole wheat bread, multigrain loaf.

verdict: the best artisanal bread bakery in bangalore for health-conscious eaters.

12. the bread shop

jayanagar / price range: rs 100-300 per item / 7.5/10

the bread shop in jayanagar focuses on, well, bread. good bread. they make sourdough, focaccia, ciabatta, and various artisanal loaves. the focaccia with rosemary and sea salt is the highlight. the pricing is more accessible than amintiri.

what to get: focaccia, sourdough, ciabatta.

verdict: good artisanal bread at a more accessible price point than the premium options.

more worth mentioning

13. mrs. kaplan’s

indiranagar / price range: rs 200-450 per item / 7.5/10

a jewish-style bakery that brings something different to bangalore. the babka (both chocolate and cinnamon) is the signature, and it’s genuinely good - braided, rich, and not too sweet. the challah bread and the rugelach are also worth trying.

what to get: chocolate babka, rugelach, challah bread.

14. aubree

koramangala / price range: rs 150-400 per item / 7.5/10

french-style cafe bakery with good croissants, quiches, and tarts. the space is bright and pleasant. the coffee is good. it’s not as technically sharp as lavonne, but more accessible in pricing and vibe.

what to get: croissant, quiche, and a coffee.

15. connie’s

whitefield / price range: rs 150-400 per item / 7.5/10

whitefield’s best bakery. connie’s does cakes, cookies, and pastries with consistent quality. the brownies are fudgy and rich. the custom cakes are popular for birthdays in the whitefield tech park crowd.

what to get: brownies, any custom cake, cookies.

16. french loaf

multiple outlets / price range: rs 50-200 per item / 7/10

french loaf is a bangalore chain that sits between amma’s and glen’s in terms of quality and pricing. the breads are fresh and reliable. the cakes are decent. the croissants are acceptable but not artisanal. it’s a solid neighbourhood bakery.

what to get: breads, basic cakes, puffs.

17. oven story (delivery only)

multiple (delivery) / price range: rs 200-400 per item / 7/10

primarily a delivery bakery for cakes and cupcakes. the quality is surprisingly good for delivery - the cakes arrive in good shape and taste fresh. the customisation options are extensive. a solid option when you need a cake delivered to someone’s door.
