tldr: kanpur in 30 seconds — india’s leather capital (400+ tanneries, factory prices), 80 km from lucknow, allen forest zoo is genuinely good, bithoor is a hidden gem, jk temple is stunning, and the food scene punches above its weight. budget rs 1500-3000/day for a comfortable trip. best time: october-march. this is the complete hub guide with links to everything you need.

kanpur is UP’s biggest industrial city. population: 3+ million. it makes leather, it makes textiles, it has IIT kanpur, and it has a food scene that nobody outside UP talks about. it’s not on any “top places to visit in india” list, and it probably never will be. but if you’re traveling through uttar pradesh, or if you’re specifically interested in leather shopping, cricket, or 1857 history, kanpur deserves a stop.

this guide is the hub for all kanpur content on rahul.biz. i haven’t visited kanpur yet — everything here is research-backed, based on verified reviews, local recommendations, and hours of cross-referencing. each section links to a detailed guide. think of this page as your starting point.

kanpur sits on the ganges, 80 km southwest of lucknow. that proximity to lucknow is important — most travelers combine the two cities, and it’s an easy 2-hour train ride between them. kanpur has its own airport (chakeri), but lucknow’s airport has far more flight options.

how to reach kanpur

by train (recommended)

kanpur central (CNB) is one of the busiest railway stations in north india. it’s on the main delhi-howrah line, which means excellent connectivity.

from delhi: shatabdi express takes about 5 hours. fares: rs 700 (chair car) to rs 1500 (executive). multiple superfast and express trains run daily. overnight trains are also available if you want to save on a night’s hotel.

from lucknow: just 80 km away. intercity trains take 1-1.5 hours. several trains daily. fares: rs 100-400 depending on class. this is the easiest connection.

from prayagraj (allahabad): about 200 km. trains take 3-4 hours. multiple options daily.

from mumbai/kolkata: overnight trains available on the main lines. 16-24 hours depending on the route.

by air

kanpur airport (chakeri) has limited commercial flights. as of 2026, there are flights to delhi, mumbai, and a few other cities, but frequency is low and fares aren’t always competitive. lucknow airport (80 km away) is the better option — it has flights to all major indian cities, better fares, and higher frequency. from lucknow airport to kanpur, take a taxi (rs 1500-2000, 2 hours) or a train from lucknow junction.

by road

from delhi: NH19, about 440 km, 6-7 hours by car. the highway is decent but busy with truck traffic. toll costs: approximately rs 800-1000.

from lucknow: NH27, about 80 km, 1.5-2 hours by car. good road conditions.

getting around kanpur

kanpur’s public transport is limited. here’s what works:

auto-rickshaws: the primary mode of transport. negotiate fares before getting in — there are no meters. typical fares: rs 30-50 within the city centre, rs 100-200 for longer distances. shared autos run on fixed routes for rs 10-20.

ola/uber: available in kanpur but reliability varies. works well in central areas (swaroop nagar, mall road, civil lines). can be hit or miss in outer areas like jajmau or bithoor road.

taxis: for day trips to bithoor or blue world theme park, hire a taxi for the day. expect rs 1500-2000 for a full day including waiting time.

e-rickshaws: cheap for short distances. rs 10-20 per trip. available around major markets and railway station.

city bus: kanpur has a city bus service, but routes are limited and buses are crowded. not recommended for visitors unless you’re on a very tight budget.

where to stay

kanpur’s hotel scene is functional rather than glamorous. there are no heritage havelis or boutique properties. here’s what’s available:

budget (rs 800-1500/night)

guesthouses and budget hotels near kanpur central station. basic rooms, attached bathrooms, wi-fi (usually). examples: hotel mandakini, hotel atithi, and various lodges around the station area. these are functional — clean enough, safe enough, but don’t expect luxury.

mid-range (rs 1500-3000/night)

hotels in civil lines, swaroop nagar, and the mall road area. air-conditioned rooms, room service, decent restaurants. this is the sweet spot for most visitors. examples: hotel landmark, hotel ratan park. you get reasonable comfort at honest prices.

upper mid-range (rs 3000-5000/night)

the best hotels in kanpur are in this range. properties near z square mall and in south kanpur. better amenities, cleaner rooms, in-house restaurants. examples: landmark towers, grand hometel.

where to stay by purpose

  • sightseeing base: civil lines or mall road — central, close to phool bagh, memorial church, nanarao park
  • food exploration: swaroop nagar — walking distance to the best restaurants and cafes
  • leather shopping: stay in the city centre and take autos to jajmau — don’t stay in jajmau itself (industrial area, not pleasant)
  • transit stop: near kanpur central station — convenient if you’re catching an early train

what to eat

kanpur’s food scene is underrated. the city has dishes that are distinctly its own, portions that are consistently generous, and prices that are some of the lowest in urban india.

iconic kanpur food

thaggu ke laddu: a sweet shop whose name literally translates to “the cheat’s laddu.” it’s been running for decades on the brilliant marketing of honest dishonesty. the sweets are actually good. this is kanpur’s most famous food brand.

kanpur ke samose: kanpur samosas are legitimately the biggest in india. oversized, generously stuffed with spiced potato, and deep-fried until perfectly crispy. naveen market and beconganj are the best areas.

biryani: kanpur has a serious biryani scene influenced by nearby lucknow. naved ki biryani is legendary — see the food guide for details.

chaat: UP-style chaat — the best in the country, fight me. the papdi chaat, aloo tikki, and dahi vada in kanpur are excellent. the street food guide covers the best spots.

what to see and do

kanpur’s attractions fall into four categories: heritage/history, temples, nature/parks, and shopping/entertainment.

the highlights

allen forest zoo: UP’s best zoo, spread across 76 hectares of natural forest. 170+ species, butterfly park, dinosaur models. rs 40 entry. closed mondays.

jk temple: the most beautiful building in kanpur. white marble, stunning architecture, maintained gardens. free entry. the evening aarti is worth catching.

bithoor: ancient town 25 km from kanpur. brahmavart ghat, valmiki ashram, mythology, 1857 history. half-day trip. free.

green park stadium: historic cricket ground. if there’s a match on, get tickets. kanpur’s cricket atmosphere is electric.

shopping

leather (kanpur’s usp)

kanpur is the leather capital of india. 400+ tanneries, 30% of india’s leather exports. the jajmau leather market sells bags, wallets, belts, shoes, and jackets at factory prices — often 50-70% cheaper than what you’d pay in delhi or mumbai retail stores.

what to buy: leather wallets (rs 200-2000), belts (rs 300-1500), bags (rs 500-5000), shoes (rs 500-3000), jackets (rs 2000-15000).

important warning: some shops sell fake leather or poor-quality goods in branded packaging. quality checks are essential. read the complete leather shopping guide before you go.

general shopping

naveen market: kanpur’s biggest traditional bazaar. clothes, electronics, street food, accessories. chaotic, crowded, authentic.

z square mall: kanpur’s main mall. brand stores, food court, multiplex. the air-conditioned refuge when kanpur’s heat gets unbearable.

swaroop nagar: the commercial heart. restaurants, cafes, clothing stores, modern retail.

budget planning

kanpur is one of the cheapest cities for travel in urban india.
