tl;dr: honest guide to auto booking apps in patna - which apps work, coverage areas, fare comparison, and tips for getting rides. from someone whose hometown it is.

tldr: rapido is the best auto booking app in patna right now. widest coverage, most drivers, lowest fares. uber auto works in central areas but wait times are longer. ola is basically dead in patna. indriver is useful for longer rides and airport trips. for everything else, you’re still bargaining with street autos. full breakdown of every option, fare comparisons, and area-wise coverage below.

here’s the uncomfortable truth about getting around patna: the city has 2.5 million people, a brand new metro (that covers one corridor so far), and an auto-rickshaw ecosystem that runs mostly on bargaining skills and luck.

if you’ve used ola or uber in bangalore or delhi, you expect to open an app, book a ride, and get picked up in 3-5 minutes. patna doesn’t work like that yet. some apps work in some areas, most don’t work in outer areas, and the street auto guys still operate like it’s 2010, where the fare is whatever they feel like charging.

patna is my hometown. every time i visit, getting around is the thing that frustrates me most. it’s also the thing that’s changing fastest. rapido has genuinely made a difference in the last two years. the metro is operational on its first corridor. e-rickshaws have taken over short-distance routes. it’s not perfect, but it’s better than it was.

this guide covers every way to book or find an auto in patna, what works, what doesn’t, and how to not get overcharged. if you’re visiting, moving here, or just tired of arguing with auto drivers at patna junction, this should help.

the quick comparison

notes:

  • fares are estimates for a 5 km ride in central patna during regular hours
  • surge pricing on rapido and uber during rain, festivals, and late evenings can increase fares 1.5-2x
  • street auto fares are after bargaining. the first price they quote is always 1.5-2x the reasonable fare

app-based options

1. rapido - the one that actually works

rapido is the closest thing patna has to a functioning ride-hailing service. it entered patna around 2022 and has steadily expanded. as of 2026, it’s the most used auto booking app in the city.

what’s available:

  • rapido bike - motorcycle taxi. cheapest option. rs 25-40 for 3-5 km rides
  • rapido auto - three-wheeler auto. rs 40-75 for 3-5 km rides
  • rapido cab - available but rare. limited driver supply for cabs

coverage:

arearapido availabilitytypical wait
boring roadexcellent3-5 min
kankarbaghexcellent3-6 min
bailey roadgood4-7 min
frazer roadgood4-8 min
patliputra colonygood5-8 min
rajendra nagargood5-8 min
patna junction areaexcellent3-5 min
ashiana nagarmoderate6-10 min
danapurmoderate8-15 min
dighapoor10-20 min
phulwari sharifpoor15+ min or no rides

fare structure:

rapido uses a base fare + per km model. here’s what typical rides cost:

routedistancerapido bikerapido auto
patna junction to boring road~5 kmrs 35-45rs 55-75
boring road to kankarbagh~3 kmrs 25-35rs 40-55
patna junction to patliputra colony~8 kmrs 55-70rs 80-110
boring road to patna airport~12 kmrs 80-100rs 120-160
kankarbagh to AIIMS patna~10 kmrs 65-85rs 100-130

pros:

  • most drivers available across patna
  • cheapest app-based option
  • bike taxis are great for beating patna’s traffic
  • in-app safety features, trip sharing, SOS button

cons:

  • surge pricing during rain is brutal (patna + rain = 2x fares)
  • driver cancellations happen, especially for short rides under rs 30
  • quality of vehicles varies. some autos are in rough shape
  • limited coverage outside central patna

my take: rapido is what i tell my cousins in patna to use for daily commuting. the bike option especially. it’s cheaper than an auto, faster in traffic, and you can actually get a ride in most parts of central patna without waiting forever. my cousin in kankarbagh uses rapido bike for his daily commute to bailey road and pays about rs 35-40 each way.

2. uber - works but barely

uber operates in patna, but calling it “available” is generous. it works, technically. the experience is far from what you’d get in a metro city.

what’s available:

  • uber moto - motorcycle. similar to rapido bike
  • uber auto - three-wheeler. available in select areas
  • ubergo - cab service. available but extremely limited driver supply

coverage: uber’s coverage in patna is concentrated in a smaller area than rapido. boring road, kankarbagh, bailey road, frazer road, and the patna junction area are where you’ll find rides. step outside these areas and your chances of getting a ride drop significantly.

fare comparison (vs rapido for same routes):

routeuber autorapido autodifference
patna junction to boring roadrs 70-90rs 55-75uber is 15-20% more
boring road to kankarbaghrs 50-65rs 40-55uber is 15-20% more
boring road to airportrs 140-180rs 120-160uber is 10-15% more

pros:

  • better driver verification and vehicle quality than rapido
  • uber’s safety features are more mature
  • fare estimates are more accurate (less surge variability)
  • receipts and billing are cleaner (useful for work expenses)

cons:

  • longer wait times (8-15 minutes is normal)
  • fewer drivers, especially evenings and early mornings
  • coverage is limited to central patna
  • driver cancellations are more frequent than rapido

my take: uber is my backup app. when rapido can’t find a ride, i try uber. it works about 60% of the time in central areas. the fares are higher but the rides are slightly more predictable. for airport rides, uber auto is sometimes the better option because the fare estimate is locked in and you avoid the negotiation drama.

3. indriver - the bidding app

indriver is an interesting one. instead of fixed pricing, you propose a fare and nearby drivers accept, reject, or counter-offer. it’s essentially a digital version of bargaining with the auto guy, except you do it from your phone.

how it works:

  1. enter pickup and drop location
  2. the app suggests a fare
  3. you can adjust the fare up or down
  4. nearby drivers see your request and accept or counter
  5. you pick a driver based on their offer, rating, and ETA

where it works in patna: indriver’s coverage in patna is moderate. it works reasonably well for routes between major areas: patna junction, boring road, kankarbagh, bailey road, patna airport. for less popular routes, you might not get bids.

when to use indriver:

  • airport transfers - app fares from uber and rapido to the airport can get inflated. indriver lets you set a fair price
  • longer rides (10+ km) - the bidding system often results in lower fares for longer distances
  • when rapido is surging - during rain or peak hours when rapido prices spike, indriver bids might be lower

when to skip indriver:

  • short rides under 3 km (not worth the bidding effort)
  • when you need a ride immediately (bidding takes time)
  • late nights (fewer drivers are active)

my take: indriver is a niche tool, not a daily commute app. i’ve used it for airport rides from boring road and saved about rs 30-50 compared to rapido’s surge pricing. it’s worth having installed as a third option.

4. ola - dead in patna

i’m including ola because people still ask about it. ola shut down auto and cab services in most tier-2 cities, including patna, through 2023-2024. the company pivoted hard toward ola electric (scooters).

current status: the ola app still works. you can open it, enter a destination, and search for rides. you just won’t find any. occasionally a driver might appear in the system, but consistent service doesn’t exist in patna anymore.

what happened: ola pulled out of smaller cities to cut costs. driver incentives dropped, drivers left, fewer rides meant fewer users, and the cycle killed the service. this happened across many tier-2 cities, not just patna.

will ola come back? maybe. if ola decides tier-2 cities are worth the investment again. but as of february 2026, don’t count on it.

non-app options

5. street autos - the original patna experience

let’s be honest: most auto rides in patna still happen the old-fashioned way. you stand at the road, wave down an auto, tell them where you want to go, they quote a price that’s 2x the reasonable fare, you negotiate, and you eventually agree on something in between.

the fare situation:

patna autos are supposed to run on meters. almost none of them do. the city government has set rates, but enforcement is minimal. here’s what you should expect to pay (after bargaining):

routereasonable farewhat they’ll askwhat to pay
patna junction to boring roadrs 70-80rs 150-200rs 80-100
boring road to kankarbaghrs 40-50rs 80-100rs 50-60
patna junction to airportrs 150-200rs 400-500rs 200-250
boring road to rajendra nagarrs 50-60rs 100-150rs 60-80
kankarbagh to gandhi maidanrs 50-60rs 100-120rs 60-70

tips for bargaining:

  1. know the distance. google maps before you go. if it’s 5 km, and you know the per-km rate is roughly rs 15, you know the ballpark
  2. always agree on price before sitting. never get in first
  3. walk away. the most effective negotiation tool. walk 10 steps toward the next auto. the price drops immediately
  4. avoid patna junction exit autos. the ones waiting right outside the station entrance charge 2-3x. walk 200 meters to the main road and flag one down
  5. use apps as leverage. show the auto guy that rapido is quoting rs 60. he’ll match it or come close
  6. shared autos exist on some routes (boring road to kankarbagh, for example). rs 15-20 per person. ask “sharing chalega?“

my family in patna says the bargaining situation has gotten slightly better since rapido became popular. drivers know that if they quote too high, you’ll just open your phone. competition helps.

6. e-rickshaws - patna’s real public transport

e-rickshaws have taken over patna in a way nobody predicted. they’re everywhere. kankarbagh, boring road, bailey road, gandhi maidan, everywhere you look, there’s a green or yellow e-rickshaw carrying 4-6 people on shared routes.

how they work:

  • fixed routes, shared rides
  • rs 10-20 per person depending on distance
  • no bargaining needed (mostly). everyone pays the same
  • they stop anywhere you ask on their route

where they’re most useful:

  • kankarbagh internal routes
  • boring road to gandhi maidan
  • bailey road short hops
  • rajendra nagar to kankarbagh
  • around patna junction

limitations:

  • slow (15-20 kmph max)
  • no AC, open sides
  • crowded during peak hours
  • not comfortable for long distances
  • routes are informal. you need to know which e-rickshaw goes where

my take: e-rickshaws are genuinely useful for short distances (1-3 km). they’re cheaper than any app, always available, and honestly kind of charming in a chaotic way. my relatives in kankarbagh use them for everything within a 2-3 km radius. for anything longer, switch to rapido or an auto.

7. patna metro - the new option

patna metro began operations in october 2025 with a 3.2 km priority corridor from zero mile (patna junction) to ISBT. it’s limited, but it works. i covered this in detail in patna is changing, but here’s the transport-relevant summary.

current status: one corridor operational, more stations being added. full network (two corridors, 31+ km, 25 stations) expected by 2027.

fares: rs 15-40 depending on distance. smart card available for regular commuters at a discount.

useful for: commuting between patna junction area and ISBT. that’s about it right now. as more stations open, this becomes the backbone of patna’s transport.

getting to and from patna airport

jay prakash narayan international airport (PAT) is about 7 km from boring road and 12 km from patna junction. the new terminal (opened june 2025) is nice. getting there? still an adventure.

your options:

optionfaretimenotes
rapido autors 120-16025-40 minbest app option
rapido bikers 80-10020-30 mincheapest, no luggage space
uber autors 140-18025-40 minmore predictable fare
indriverrs 100-150 (bid)25-40 mingood for negotiating
street autors 200-300 (negotiated)25-40 minexpect hard bargaining
prepaid taxi (airport)rs 250-40025-40 minavailable at airport counter

airport arrival tip: when you land at patna airport, you’ll see auto and taxi guys swarming the exit. ignore them. walk to the prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal first. if the prepaid fare seems high, step outside and open rapido. this is exactly what my cousin does every time he picks someone up. book the rapido from the parking area, not from inside the terminal where GPS can be confused.

airport departure tip: book a rapido auto 30-40 minutes before you need to reach the airport. add buffer for patna traffic, especially if you’re traveling via boring road during evening hours. if rapido isn’t finding a ride, have indriver ready as backup.

area-wise transport guide

this is the practical part. depending on where you live in patna, your transport experience varies dramatically.

boring road: best connected area. rapido and uber both work well. e-rickshaws and autos easily available. walking distance to many restaurants, cafes, and shops. if you live here, transport is the least of your worries. check the best areas to live in patna guide for why boring road tops most lists.

kankarbagh: second best. rapido works well. e-rickshaw network is excellent for internal movement. auto availability is good. slightly cheaper fares than boring road because of more driver supply.

bailey road: rapido and uber both work. traffic is terrible during peak hours though. a 3 km ride can take 20 minutes. bike taxis are better here than autos because of traffic.

patliputra colony: rapido works but with longer wait times (5-8 minutes). fewer autos cruise this area because it’s more residential. plan your rides in advance.

rajendra nagar: decent rapido coverage. e-rickshaws connect well to kankarbagh. auto availability is moderate.

danapur: this is where app-based transport drops off. rapido works sometimes. uber rarely. you’re mostly dependent on street autos and e-rickshaws. if you’re moving to patna and need reliable transport, avoid outer areas like danapur unless you have your own vehicle.

phulwari sharif and beyond: app-based transport essentially doesn’t exist here. street autos, e-rickshaws, and personal vehicles only.

tips for getting around patna efficiently

1. download rapido before you land. have the app installed, account set up, and payment method ready. don’t try to figure this out while standing outside patna junction at 10 pm.

2. keep cash for autos. street autos don’t take UPI. some rapido drivers prefer cash too. keep rs 200-500 in small notes (rs 10, rs 20, rs 50) for transport. having exact change avoids the “change nahi hai” drama.

3. learn the landmark system. patna runs on landmarks, not addresses. “boring road pe hotel maurya ke paas” works better than a pin on google maps. tell your driver a landmark near your destination.

4. avoid peak hours. boring road and bailey road between 9-10 am and 5-7 pm are nightmares. fares surge on apps, and street autos quote higher. travel off-peak when possible.

5. use google maps for fare validation. before bargaining with a street auto, check google maps for the distance. if it’s 4 km, you know the fare should be around rs 60-80, not the rs 150 the driver is asking.

6. rain changes everything. patna in monsoon season (july-september) means waterlogged roads, cancelled rides, 2x surge pricing, and autos that refuse to go anywhere. read about this in the broader context of how patna is changing, but for transport, rainy days mean you either pay the premium or don’t travel.

7. late night options are limited. after 10 pm, rapido driver availability drops significantly. uber is nearly impossible. street autos charge 1.5-2x. if you’re out late, pre-book or have a regular auto driver’s number saved.

the future of transport in patna

patna’s transport situation is genuinely improving, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.

the metro, when fully operational by 2027, will transform commuting on its corridors. patna’s smart city projects include intelligent traffic management that should help with congestion on boring road and bailey road.

rapido and uber expanding their driver networks means app-based transport coverage will keep growing. the new airport terminal has improved the arrival experience significantly.

the city still needs enforcement of auto meter rules, better last-mile connectivity from metro stations, and more transport options for outer areas. but compared to even 3-4 years ago, the improvement is real.

if you’re considering moving to patna or thinking about freelancing from patna, transport is one factor that’s getting better by the year. it’s not bangalore-level. it might never be. but it’s functional, and it’s improving.

for what daily commuting costs, see the transport section in the cost of living in patna guide. auto rides are still one of the cheapest line items in your monthly budget.
