tl;dr: honest comparison of 5 mac apps that show spotify lyrics in a floating, always-on-top window. karacookie, lyricfever, lyricglow, fluiric, lyric overlay. tested in 2026.

tldr: five mac apps tested for floating, always-on-top spotify lyrics. karacookie is the lightest (~5 mb), the only zero-setup option, and the only one with a click-through hotkey. lyricfever is the most feature-complete free alternative. lyricglow if you also play apple music or youtube music. fluiric if you want minimal spotify-only. lyric overlay if you need cross-platform.

spotify’s native lyrics on mac are bad. they’re pinned to the bottom-right corner of the spotify window, the font is small, and the second you switch apps you can’t see them anymore. for a service that bought musixmatch’s lyrics dataset, the desktop experience is embarrassing.

what i actually want is a small floating window that hovers above whatever app i’m in — code editor, browser, zoom, fullscreen video — and shows the current line of the song in big readable text. ideally karaoke-style, so the words light up as they’re sung.

full disclosure before we start: karacookie is mine. i’ll be honest about its rough edges, and i’ll point out where the alternatives are actually better.

what makes a “good” floating lyrics window

after testing all five apps over a couple of months, four things separate the usable apps from the toys:

  • always-on-top — the window stays above other windows by default. no z-order battles.
  • survives fullscreen — works over fullscreen zoom calls, fullscreen video, fullscreen ides. this is the test most older apps fail.
  • click-through — you can click apps underneath the window without it stealing focus. only karacookie does this properly in 2026.
  • low ram — under ~50 mb. electron-wrapped apps that use 150+ mb for a tiny window are not acceptable in 2026.

a fifth nice-to-have: joins all macos spaces so the window follows you when you swipe between desktops.

1. karacookie — floating bar, zero setup, ~5 mb

karacookie is what i built because nothing else on this list got the install flow right. every other app either needs a spotify developer account, an oauth flow, or some kind of token setup. karacookie needs one macos privacy prompt and that’s it.

it shows lyrics in a horizontal floating bar by default. words light up and bounce as they’re sung — per-word karaoke reveal interpolated from line timing. the wipe color is pulled from the dominant tone of the current album art, so each track has its own visual mood.

what it does well:

  • truly zero setup — no spotify dev account, no client id, no oauth. one macos accessibility prompt and lyrics appear.
  • click-through hotkey — toggle and the bar stops intercepting clicks. type, scroll, click behind it.
  • joins all spaces, floats above fullscreen apps — auxiliary window, behaves correctly over zoom and fullscreen video.
  • ~5 mb native swift — lightest option here. near-zero cpu when paused.
  • 6 themes (minimal, crystal, bloom, spotlight, concert, neon) so you can pick low-distraction or full immersion.
  • works on spotify free.

where it falls short:

  • v0.2 still — there are rough edges. some japanese tracks fall back to line sync because per-word timing isn’t in lrclib for them.
  • macos only. windows port is wip but not shipping yet.
  • no preferences sync across machines yet.

who it’s for: anyone who wants a floating bar that just works in 60 seconds, doesn’t want to touch a developer console, and wants the apple-music-style karaoke reveal.

2. lyricfever — window + menu-bar, most feature-complete

lyricfever is open source (gpl), native swift, and calls itself the spiritual successor to lyricsx. it has two modes: a menu-bar line that sits above your menu bar, and a full floating window mode that you can drag anywhere on screen.

what it does well:

  • supports both spotify and apple music (most floating lyrics apps don’t do apple music).
  • menu-bar mode is a great middle ground when you want lyrics but don’t want a big window.
  • actively maintained, big github star count, fast issue response.
  • ~30 mb — light, not as light as karacookie.

where it falls short:

  • line-level sync only. no per-word karaoke reveal.
  • the window mode doesn’t have a click-through toggle.
  • non-english tracks (japanese, hindi) get lower hit rates than i expected.

who it’s for: people who want the most stable mac floating lyrics app and also use apple music. or people who prefer menu-bar minimalism over a floating bar.

3. lyricglow — word reveal with a glow, multi-source

lyricglow is open source, mac native, and does word-by-word reveal with a soft glow effect on each word. it supports spotify, apple music, and youtube music — the only app here that covers all three.

what it does well:

  • the glow effect on each word is genuinely beautiful, especially in dark themes.
  • multi-source — if you bounce between spotify and youtube music, this is the best floating option.
  • per-word sync is sharp.

where it falls short:

  • ~50 mb — heavier than karacookie or lyricfever.
  • one core visual style — no theme switching.
  • no click-through mode.
  • smaller lyrics source pool, so misses on long-tail non-english tracks.

who it’s for: people who use spotify + apple music + youtube music interchangeably and want a single floating window across all three.

4. fluiric — clean swiftui, spotify only

fluiric is a swiftui-built floating panel for spotify only. closed source, free, and visually clean — it fits macos design language better than most.

what it does well:

  • clean swiftui ui, very mac-native looking.
  • simple install, no developer account needed.
  • low cpu.

where it falls short:

  • spotify-only. no apple music support.
  • line-level sync only.
  • closed source.
  • updates have slowed in 2026.
  • no click-through.

who it’s for: spotify-only users who want a minimal, native-looking floating window without feature creep.

5. lyric overlay — cross-platform fallback

lyric overlay is a cross-platform floating lyrics overlay that supports spotify, apple music, youtube music, and even vlc. it does real-time synced lyrics with customizable opacity, which makes it easy to dial in how prominent the window is.

what it does well:

  • broadest platform support — spotify, apple music, youtube music, vlc all in one app.
  • customizable opacity, so you can make the window almost invisible while still showing lyrics.
  • real-time line sync.

where it falls short:

  • mac is clearly not the priority — feels ported.
  • always-on-top works but has some flickers in fullscreen apps.
  • no per-word karaoke reveal.
  • no click-through.

who it’s for: people who watch a lot of music videos on youtube music or want lyrics while playing local files in vlc, and want one app for everything.

how to install karacookie in 60 seconds

  1. download karacookie from /karacookie — single .command file installer, no terminal commands to type.
  2. double-click the .command file. macos may prompt about an “open source app from the internet” — click open.
  3. start playing music in spotify (or apple music). karacookie’s floating bar appears.
  4. allow accessibility access when macos prompts — this is the only permission, it’s needed for the click-through hotkey to work and for karacookie to read the playing track.
  5. drag the bar to wherever you want it on screen. it’ll remember the position.

that’s it. you’ll be looking at karaoke lyrics within a minute.

if you hit a privacy prompt that says control of “spotify” — click ok. karacookie only reads, it doesn’t play/pause/skip.

awards (subjective, june 2026)

  • best overall: karacookie — zero setup, lightest, click-through, karaoke reveal. unique combination.

  • best for apple music users: lyricfever — second-best apple music support after lyricglow, plus a great menu-bar mode.

if you’re starting from zero

  2. add lyricfever if you also use apple music or want a menu-bar mode for low-distraction work.
  3. add lyricglow on top if you split time between spotify, apple music, and youtube music.

you don’t need to pay for a floating spotify lyrics app on mac in 2026. all five apps on this list are free, and three of them are open source.
