tl;dr: spotify user envious of apple music's word-by-word animated lyrics? here's how to get the closest visual on spotify for mac in 2026. honest comparison + setup.

tldr: apple music’s lyrics view is the gold standard — big animated word-by-word reveal, album-art-colored background, fills the screen. spotify has nothing like it on desktop. closest free option for mac is karacookie with the concert theme (per-word reveal + per-track color wipe). lyricglow is the second closest. paid apps don’t do it any better. honest gap: karacookie is a floating bar, not a fullscreen takeover — if you want true fullscreen big lyrics, keep apple music for that.

i’ve used spotify since 2014. i tried apple music for a year in 2023, mostly because their lyrics view was so good. then i switched back to spotify and immediately missed the lyrics. that’s the actual reason i started building karacookie (full disclosure, it’s mine).

this post is for anyone in the same spot — spotify user, envious of apple music’s lyrics, wondering if there’s a way to get the same look without switching services. there is. it’s not perfect. here’s the honest version.

what makes apple music’s lyrics so good

if you’ve never used apple music’s lyrics view, here’s what you’re looking at:

  • big type — lyrics fill most of the screen, not a tiny corner card
  • word-by-word reveal — each word lights up as it’s sung, with a smooth wipe animation
  • dynamic background color — extracted from the album art, so every track has its own mood
  • immersive scale — when you tap the lyrics icon, it takes over the now-playing view
  • smooth animation — the reveal is buttery, no jank, no lag

the combination is what makes it feel like a music video. no other streaming service has matched it as of mid-2026.

what spotify gives you instead

spotify’s lyrics on desktop are functional and that’s about it:

  • a small card in the bottom-right of the now-playing view
  • line-by-line highlight (current line bold, rest dimmer)
  • no per-word reveal
  • no album art color theming
  • the fullscreen lyrics view has been spotty since late 2024 — works sometimes, missing other times, lots of community threads about it being broken or removed

on mobile spotify added a subtle word-level animation in 2023 but it never came to desktop. on mac, you’re stuck with the small card.

what “feature parity” actually means

to get the apple music look on spotify, an app needs four things:

  1. per-word reveal — each word animates in as it’s sung
  2. dynamic background color from album art — not a fixed theme
  3. immersive scale — big enough that you actually read it, not squinting
  4. smooth animation — no jitter, no lag, no missed sync

most spotify lyrics apps hit one or two of these. very few hit three. none hit all four (because none of them go fullscreen the way apple music does — they’re all floating windows or strips).

1. karacookie — concert and bloom themes

karacookie is the app i built specifically to scratch this itch. two of its six themes are explicitly modeled on apple music’s lyrics view:

  • concert theme — per-word karaoke reveal, with a wipe color extracted from the current album art. each track gets its own visual mood. closest single match to apple music’s reveal animation.
  • bloom theme — the album art blurs and blooms behind the lyrics. less karaoke-style, more music-video. closer to what apple music does on iphone in the now-playing lyrics view.

both support per-word reveal interpolated from line timing when word-level data isn’t in lrclib. on popular english tracks with word-level data in the database, it’s near identical to apple music. on long-tail or non-english tracks, the words still animate, just smoothly rather than precisely.

honest gap: karacookie is a floating bar/strip. it doesn’t take over the full screen. if you want apple music’s full-screen immersive lyrics view, no spotify app gives you that — including this one.

2. lyricglow — word reveal with glow

lyricglow is the second closest. it’s mac native, open source, does word-by-word reveal with a soft glow effect, and supports spotify + apple music + youtube music.

the glow effect is genuinely beautiful in dark themes. the per-word sync is sharp. it doesn’t do dynamic album-art color matching the way karacookie’s concert theme does — the glow color is more uniform — so it’s slightly less “apple music feel” overall, but it’s still in the same league.

3. lyricfever — line-by-line only (included for clarity)

lyricfever is a great app — i recommend it in my other comparison post. but it does line-by-line sync, not per-word karaoke reveal. if you specifically want the apple music animated word look, lyricfever isn’t it.

i’m including it here because people often ask “does lyricfever do karaoke?” — no, it does line highlight, not word-by-word reveal. different vibe.

4. spotify’s own fullscreen lyrics

spotify has a fullscreen lyrics view on desktop, accessed by clicking the mic icon in the now-playing bar (then the expand arrows). when it works, it’s a clean line-by-line view that scales up to fill the screen.

the problem: it’s been unreliable since late 2024. on some accounts it’s gone entirely. on others it shows but breaks during certain tracks. spotify hasn’t said much about it publicly. don’t rely on it as your daily setup — but if it works for you, it’s the only built-in fullscreen lyrics view spotify offers, and it costs nothing.

5. dynamic lyrics — paid, line-by-line only

dynamic lyrics on the mac app store is well-built but does line-by-line sync only. no per-word reveal. it supports translations, which is its real selling point — not the apple music look. skip if your goal is the karaoke animation.

how to set up karacookie to look most like apple music

  1. install karacookie — single download, one macos prompt, ~5 mb
  2. open settings → themes → pick concert (or bloom if you want the album art behind lyrics)
  3. enable per-track color in settings — this is the apple-music-style album-art color matching
  4. set the font size to medium or large (the bar height auto-adjusts)
  5. play any track in spotify — the lyrics appear, words light up in the color of the current album art

that’s the closest to apple music’s lyrics look you’ll get on spotify, free, in 2026.

if you switch between spotify and apple music, you don’t need to change anything — karacookie auto-detects which player is active and shows lyrics for whatever’s playing.

honest gaps

i said this earlier, saying it again because it matters:

karacookie is a floating bar, not a fullscreen takeover. apple music’s lyrics view fills the whole now-playing pane. karacookie fills a strip — usually at the bottom or top of your screen, you choose. if you want the truly fullscreen, immersive, “music video” experience that apple music’s lyrics view gives you, no spotify app currently delivers that. you’d have to keep apple music for that specific mode.

what karacookie (and lyricglow) do is bring the visual language — per-word reveal, album-art color, smooth animation — to spotify in a window that floats above whatever you’re doing. for most people who just want lyrics to look beautiful while they work or listen, that’s enough. if you want the dedicated fullscreen experience, that’s a real gap.

a couple other limitations to know:

  • per-word timing is interpolated when lrclib doesn’t have word-level data (varies by track)
  • macos only — windows version is wip
  • v0.2 still, you’ll find rough edges
